Background
Patchett Joinery was approached by the owners of a beautiful historic home in Tadcaster, Yorkshire, to address a major challenge. Their property, full of charm and character, was not ideal for modern-day living due to an outdated and deteriorating orangery.
The original orangery spanned the sitting room, dining room, and hallway, but its single-glazed windows and rotting timber frames made the space unbearably cold in winter and uncomfortably hot in summer. Worse, the decaying timber had become a breeding ground for insects, further compromising the integrity of the structure.
To add to the challenge, the existing stained glass was in poor condition, requiring a complete redesign to maintain the home’s historic charm while introducing a more contemporary aesthetic.
The Solution: Bespoke Accoya Timber Orangery Installation
To breathe new life into this Victorian villa, we designed and installed a custom Accoya timber orangery. Accoya is indigestible by a wide range of pests so is highly resistant to insect attack and damage, so we can guarantee there will be no further insect infestations, a huge relief to the homeowner!
The orangery screen consisted of windows from our high-performance Flush casement range and an entrance door with decorative Georgian bars and fitted with bulb-end distressed antique nickel hardware. This created a look in keeping with the original look and feel of the historic Victorian villa.
The screen was colour-matched to Smoke Cream by our paint partner, Symphony Coatings by Sikkens. This water-based paint system helps to protect the Accoya timber from fungal damage, UV exposure and weather conditions.
We also crafted the replacement orangery with thermally insulating glass. Pilkington Opitherm S1 Plus is a high-performance off-line coated Low E glass, with an incredibly low U-value. Thermal glass has an advanced coating technology applied to the surface which captures warmth from natural sunlight to help heat the home and reflects heat back into the room reducing energy usage in the home. This creates an ideal solution to having a living space that is too hot in the summer and too cold in the winter, but can also lead to reduced energy costs.

Outcomes: A Warm and Inviting Home with Enhanced Security
The transformation was remarkable. The new orangery not only rejuvenated the home’s exterior but also greatly enhanced comfort and security.
Improved Thermal Efficiency: The homeowners noticed an immediate difference in indoor temperatures, with the house staying warm in winter and cool during the summer.
Reduced Energy Bills: Although the exact savings are hard to quantify due to rising energy prices, the homeowners estimate a significant reduction in energy costs.
Seamless Operation and Enhanced Security: The new windows and doors open effortlessly, providing superior security compared to the original fixtures.
Client Testimonial:
“The windows were an absolute game-changer throughout the winter. On the coldest days, they transformed the house from extremely uncomfortable to a warm and cosy environment.
The biggest difference we noticed is in the mornings – when we come downstairs, the room has still retained heat from the evening before. In the evenings, when the fire is lit, the lounge and dining areas can become a little too warm, which is a welcome change. We couldn’t be happier with the product – looks, finish, and practical application.”
